Designed By Consumers For Consumers At Hamilton Beach, every appliance has to perform well for consumers before it ever makes it onto the shelf. As we design products, we seek out honest feedback and opinions from a variety of sources. Now that's Good Thinking. For the OpenEase Jar Opener, we focused on handgrip, comfort, and control. We talked to The Arthritis Institute and interviewed people with dexterity issues and arthritis. As we sought their feedback about the jar opener, we left no stone unturned. How does it feel in your hand? Which location do you prefer for the buttons? How does it feel when you press them? Once we were clear about consumers' needs, we knew we had a product that would make their lives easier. About Arthritis* Did you know that arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States? Approximately 50 million Americans live with arthritis. That makes even the simplest tasks like opening jars a daily struggle. * Source: 2007-2009 National Health Interview Survey (conducted by National Center for Health Statistics). Tips & Care Do not use with plastic jars. Jar opener is intended only for glass jars with screw-on lids. Be sure the outer arms of the jar opener fit securely on jar to prevent slipping. The jar opener will turn off automatically when the arms reach the outermost or innermost position. For tapered jars, place hand on top of jar opener to hold firmly in place to ensure that the arms do not slip on the jar. For more compact storage, press the "Open Jar" button to reset the arms to the innermost position. To replace batteries, press and slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. After replacing batteries, slide the cover closed in the opposite direction of the arrow. The jar opener may start running when the batteries are installed. This is normal.

This Hamilton Beach jar opener would work well for someone who has difficulty with jar lids. I tried using the jar opener with both small lids and larger lids and it does well most of the time. My biggest problem was with a jar of spaghetti sauce. The jar opener would slip off the jar because of the tapered glass. The manufacturer recommends holding the jar opener down in those circumstances. Once I did that, it worked. However, although I didn't have to use the full weight of my body to hold the jar opener down, it did require more force than I think some elderly people have. Those are the people who would likely be using this device. So, I conclude that it works for some jars and not others, if you don't want to apply any force at all.I do like the one touch operation. It doesn't stop automatically. One must press the "release lid" button to have it release, and then it just keeps opening until the arms are fully extended. To close for storage, press the "open jar" button and let it run through the cycle. The jar opener comes with batteries. It's a little bulky, but will fit in most kitchen drawers. It works on lids from 1 to 4 inches. I think it's handy to have around when the old spoon on the lid trick doesn't work.

My wife suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, so we were looking for a jar opener that could help her out when I am not around. The Hamilton Beach Automatic Jar Opener does work, it opened every jar we tried it on, but the design is a mess. For starters, it has to be in 'home' position to start the opening process, as well as to be powered down. The 'home' position rests with the 'clamps' at their widest point, making it bulky to store. The two clamps extend out of each end, you place the unit on top of the jar, turn it on, and then the clamps tighten until the lid pops off. It's also very slow and loud just getting to that 'home' position. There is no off switch. It just turns itself off when it gets to the widest point. Another knock is that there are two very large buttons on top of the opener, one to 'open jar' and another to 'release lid'. They are very easy to press, so when we put the opener in a kitchen drawer, inevitably it would bump against something and open or close every time the drawer moved. It runs on batteries, which is nice. It's also fairly small, about the size of a telephone receiver. If you're hurting for space, but NEED a jar opener, it'll get the job done. It just seems like some easy design changes would have made living with it much more comfortable, especially the addition of an 'off' switch.

I've used two different automatic jar/bottle openers and this one is the better of the two brands. I received this for review, so I wasn't afraid to put it to the test. It is noisy, and it is a bit slow (no noisier or slower than its competitors though), and I have only had it for about 6 months, but I put it to work pretty hard. The buttons are large and easy to use, and the device is not heavy. Here are my test/usage results:1. Sealed pickle jar - Opened! (I had my doubts on this one, and it strained a bit, but it worked!)2. Peanut butter jar - Opened easily!3. Oil bottle (tall, odd shape top half) - Opened easily!4. Dried spice bottle of oregano - Opened easily!5. Picante sauce bottle (odd shaped upper half) - Opened easily!6. Hot sauce bottle - too small (item needs to be at least 1 inch in diameter to work)7. Protein jug - too large (max size is 4 inches diameter - jug was about 5 inches)8. Sealed, spill resistant insulated mug from a major national chain coffee house (these can be a pain) - Opened! I put this one on TIGHT too!***YOU CAN USE THIS TO OPEN CHILD-PROOF PILL BOTTLES twist off kind such as the value-size bottle of ibuprofen or naproxen sodium, IF YOU CAN PUSH DOWN a bit to engage the lock on the lid. I used a bit of downward pressure and the opener did all the rest of the work (the gripping and twisting part). You could even use your elbow or forearm. This can save you quite a bit of money, as most of the store brands don't make the easy open bottles designed for arthritis like the name brands sometimes offer. If the little rubber feet get oily (like from opening the cooking oil bottle), you can wash them with a bit of soap to restore their grip. This would be an excellent gift for someone with arthritis, or who have a tough time gripping and twisting, or perhaps for someone with carpal tunnel syndrome.
