I ordered these coffee filters because they are unbleached and, though I haven't used this particular brand before, I trusted that it would be fine. The filters, I guess, are standard unbleached, but the problem is the smell of them. I knew it as soon as I opened the package- the little box of filters itself has a perfumy-smell, and unfortunately, it transferred to the filters. I do not like this smell at all and I don't believe it is safe. If anything, these filters should smell like cardboard - that would be ok. But these smell like they have been sitting around in a store where chemical/perfume type scents abounded, like near the perfume or shampoo bottles. In some grocery stores, the produce even smells like that and it's hard to wash out. These filters can't be washed, so I wish I hadn't ordered them. I put them in a baggie with some baking soda at the bottom, then put in a few coffee beans. But I can still smell the perfume. It's unhealthy and I don't like my coffee to taste like that. I will not be ordering these again.

In trying to be greener, I was using the gold tone permanent filter. But I was getting a lot of really fine grounds in the bottom of the pot. I couldn't drink the last part of each cup and I couldn't use the last cup in the pot. It seemed like a lot of waste to me. So I looked for the next best green solution, which led me to this product. They work great and I have the comfort of knowing that they are compostable and aren't leaching dioxin into my coffee from any chlorine bleaching. I'm completely happy with this compromise.
